Where do I begin? So many great things happened last month. My husband completed his graduate program May 3rd and celebrated his birthday the next day, May 4th. We celebrated our wedding anniversary May 25th and moved into our new house Memorial Day Weekend! As you can tell, it was a super exciting and busy month for me, and I’m excited to see everything that’s in store for our family as we embark on a new season of our lives. I foresee a summer filled with rest, relaxation, DIY projects, decorating, meeting new neighbors, spending time with family, and much, much more! What a joy it is to feel grounded, to have a place to grow and to thrive.
As with any moving process, there’s a ton of cleaning involved. We moved into our new home from a two bedroom apartment, and I felt shocked at all we had accumulated in three years. The more boxes we packed, the more dirt was revealed. But instead of cringing at the job, I was actually looking forward to it!
You see, before I learned about kicking the toxins out of my home, cleaning was such a taxing experience for me. Every vent and fan in the house was on, closed windows were immediately opened to allow for fresh airflow, strong smells of bleach and fragrant concoctions lingered about for a few days only to be reintroduced into the air because it was already time to clean again! This used to be my life, but now I don’t clean like that anymore. Why? Because I’ve found powerful non-toxic cleaning products that have replaced all of the chemical laden cleaning products I used to have in my home. These products have not only been cost effective, but they actually have constituents in them that balance and support my body because they are made with organic plant based substances, and I absolutely love it! Best of all, concentrated essential oils makes cleaning my home effortless in so many ways!
At this point, you may be thinking, “That’s great for you, but it’s really not that big of a deal! Natural cleaners? Chemical cleaners? They all do the same thing! Right? What’s so great about choosing natutal cleaners?”
Well, here’s the big deal. What your skin is exposed to matters because everything gets absorbed through your skin! Your skin is holding all of your organs together. What you put topically on your skin gets exposed to your liver or your kidneys or your nervous system or your brain… what you put on top of your skin effects everything. The more we expose ourselves to harsh toxins, the worst it gets. But cheer up! There are natural cleaning agents available out there you can use to start swapping out toxic products in your home. Need a little more convencing? Here are a few points to think about as you consider making the switch!
Contrary to popular belief, natural cleaning products are super powerful! I mean, think about it for a minute. What did your great, great, great grandparents clean with before 409 came on the market? They would have used natural cleaners like castile soaps, baking soda, and white vinegar to get the job done! And if the natural cleaners they used weren’t safe and powerful, then there would have been epidemics of sickness everywhere and death to follow suit… which means none of us would be here, right?! And if you think that sounds a little extreme, it’s not. Just research different epidemics throughout history and the discoveries behind them to prove my point. Researching a man by the name of Ignaz Semmelweis would be a great way to start. The simple discovery he made about cleanliness is not only still being put into practice until this day, but has also ended up saving a countless number of lives!
Second, non toxic cleaners are superior to chemical cleaners. Why? Because they are less taxing on the body! Your body’s immune system spends 24 hours a day every day fighting off foreign invaders to the body. The immune system has enough to deal with as soon as you walk out of your front door. And as more and more toxins become dumped into the environment, this adds to the amount of toxins the body has to fight off constantly. Well, think about it. If we go out and then purchase cleaning products with even more toxins in them, we’re just adding more work for the body to do. And unless you are supporting your body with high quality supplements to help it fight, which, let’s be real, most people aren’t doing anyway, it just makes the body work to the point that it breaks down at an even faster rate. So with that in mind, the choice to use natural cleaning products for me is a no-brainier! It frees up my mind to know that if accidentally ingested, I don’t have to rush anyone to the hospital or call poison control like those warning labels advise. I don’t worry about them having an adverse effects on my skin. I don’t give a second thought about any of these things which gives my mind incredible freedom!
And lastly, natural cleaning products are cost effective! A little goes such a long way, and with prices inflating all around us from gasoline to the housing market, we could all benefit from the use of tried and true natural cleaners. Here are a few of my absolute favorite natural cleaners that no home should be without:
- Baking Soda (aluminum free) – Adds extra abrasion for ultimate cleaning power
- Borax – Give a boost to your non-toxic laundry detergent… can also be used to keep ants away and other pests
- Castile Soap – Naturally derived from animals fats… a little goes a long way for amazing deep cleaning
- Essential Oils – Replace your toxic air fresheners with essential oils and take your experience to Cleaning 2.0! Use pure, therapeutic essential oils to balance and support your body while you clean

Using these cleaners has made our new house a home! I love how every room smells so fresh and inviting! I love the way my cleaning regimen has changed!
